Whenever I do talk about veganism, I never, and I mean NEVER refer to people living in rural areas or those who are physically unable to be vegan due to other reasons (those are very few and far between but we’ll leave that for now), people in supermarkets who have to choose between that pound of beef or rice….well I think it’s obvious these are the people I’m directing my ‘militant views’ on
let’s look at the definition of the word ‘Militant’ shall we?
favouring confrontational or violent methods in support of a political or social cause
… Nope, that is not me, I don’t see the point of getting my hands dirty or hurting anyone because they are ignorant, that won’t solve anything and won’t help the animals. I understand the importance of education when it comes to veganism because if the knowledge isn’t there people will not remain vegan and find any reason under the sun to do so. So no, I DO NOT favour confrontational or violent methods to turn people vegan(maybe for revenge but i’m not trying to get myself arrested here). If this was the only option however, yes, I would do it, but it is not. As much as I would love for people who willingly hurt animals to feel the same amount of pain I could not knowingly want some random consumer to be subjected to the same pain because society does such a good job of making animal use seem necessary.
The amazing thing about becoming vegan is the learning part. As your eyes are opened to more of the lies fed to us by the media and generations past it becomes incredibly hard to put that veil back over our eyes. I remember the day I did my research for becoming vegan, I was struck by so many emotions the strongest one being absolute indignation and confusion. I couldn’t understand why we would need to hide all these facts when we could survive perfectly well without hurting animals. The fact that animal use is so utterly unnecessary but because it served humans more to keep these industries around just blew me away. THIS is what I want people to feel and no amount of me being violent with them or ‘forcing’ them will bring this about. I am a strong believer that only education will help, a strong compassionate person will be able to see the difference and this usually happens to children who strongly question their parents about their food choices but usually parents managed to throw these questions out with lies and as time goes on the compassion in the children is lost due to the ease of animal use.
Militant Vegans (by this I mean Vegans who are unapologetic about the freedom of animals and fight for justice) are often told that they’re pushing their views on people just because they share information on veganism on their own personal social media or offer information on veganism. There is literally nothing forceful about these actions. In my case, I am not forcing anyone to go onto my Instagram page and look at my posts, I’m not forcing anyone to read my Facebook status’ I’m not forcing broccoli down anyone’s throats, I’m not touching anyone, I’m not doing a damn thing besides relaying a message of compassion and facts. If anyone sees my articles it’s because they used their own fingers and pressed the link. This idea of force arises from people’s own curiosity and need to not have to take responsibility about the frightening truth. We are literally just fighting for the right’s of innocent animals, stop animal cruelty, save the environment and help people live healthy lives. Veganism isn’t a business. We are not paid to give you information that would be detrimental to your well-being, unlike the agri-businesses.
In summary All I have on my side is facts and science, a lot of people hate facts and science, I am not saying that my activism is better than anyone else’s seeing as I have not managed to vegucate all of my immediate peers but I will not change my approach because I focus on the animals, the real victims here and anyone who chooses to focus on the humans who are getting their feelings hurt over some facts are the ones to question and label because the last time I checked, you would prefer that someone does everything they can to set you free rather than worry about your oppressor’s feelings. I will therefore hold that militant veganism badge with pride because if that is what it will take to freeing animals then so be it
